A Voice that could Stop Wars
ONE Achingly Beautiful NIGHT IN BEIRUT's Music Hall
Tunisian-born singer and oud virtuoso Dhafer Youssef’s hypnotic, Sufi-inspired music, which connects the ancient with the modern, the East with the West in an enticing coalescence of culture, dropped by Beirut for one dazzling night. The kind of gig you watch and pray would never end, charged with such magic that you knew it would leave its mark, move you, change you... He managed to put a smile of Wonderment on my face, which seems to last forever... Dhafer Yousef... One of the most interesting artists alive.
I believe I was lucky to be in that enchanted Music Hall. The atmosphere was so electric; a genius of contamination in fact! I got transported, for an hour or so, to another level. This man is without doubt one of the most moving and spirited vocalist that I have ever heard or had the pleasure to see and meet live. Cuz I met him at the end of his gig, hugged him, thanked him for that awesome night that brought back hope to my city; yep indeed, “a voice that could stop wars;” and I promised him that we will meet again..

Love & War
Bomb, Barriers of Love & War graphed on Beirut's walls
Came across these Wall Art Tags surfing the 'weewee' Wild Web... Found them Lovely, Loud & Fully-Loaded of War memories.
These tags act as a reminder of a mentality still deeply anchored in many Lebanese minds, which seem to be setting the stage for another skirmished round, with their rancorous spirit building barriers and putting wicked bitter sentiments at the forefront.
These graffitis are one good metaphor of all the ingredients that pilled up & triggered back in 1975 an angry thunder on my country.
Today, it seems that not much has been learned from the past, not much has been altered in the mentalities--even the new generation has been contaminated with hate, intolerance, and the poisonous confessional sticky-deadly virus.
May Peace prevail!...

An Illustration of grunge musician legend, Kurt Cobain's suicidal act [April 1994] by Italian artist Laurina Paperina.
Kurt Cobain was the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the Seattle-based rock band Nirvana. Cobain formed Nirvana in 1987 with Krist Novoselic. Within two years, the band became a fixture of the burgeoning Seattle grunge scene.
In 1991, the arrival of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" marked the beginning of a dramatic shift of popular rock music away from the dominant genres of the 1980s (glam metal, dance-pop etc.) and toward grunge and alternative rock.
The music media eventually awarded the song "anthem-of-a-generation" status, and, with it, Cobain was labeled a "spokesman" for Generation X.
During the last years of his life, Cobain struggled with drug addiction and the media pressures surrounding him and his wife, Courtney Love.
On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead in his home in Seattle, the victim of what was officially ruled a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. In ensuing years, the circumstances of his death became a topic of fascination and debate.

The largest world prison
Reporters Without Borders’ Beijing 2008 campaign was released in the French newspaper Libération and on 'Reporters sans Frontières' website.
Since China will be hosting the Olympic Games next August, Reporters without Borders rolled out a campaign asserting, "China is the largest world prison for freedom of expression defenders."
Many celebrities who have endorsed RSF's campaign (French actress Carole Bouquet among a handful of other prominent figures) are being photographed by Jean-François Robert wearing the "Beijing 2008" T-shirt condemning China's stance vis-à-vis human rights issues.
The Beijing 2008 campaign T-shirt is on sale for €25 or $30, and is not made in China, mind you, but got printed in France.

Charming e-burka
THIS IS ONE PUZZLING CRAZY FUNNY INVENTION
Markus Kison’s ‘Charming Burka’ was showcased at Seamless, a fashion event, featuring innovative and experimental works, interactive clothing, and technology-based fashion organised by MIT Media Lab graduate students.
‘Charming Burka’ is a digitally-enabled covering that gives the wearer the option of electronically displaying the face they are being made to hide. A controversial product, though not explicitly forbidden by Islamic law, the burka apparently deals with Freud’s idea that all clothes can be positioned between appeal and shame.
The German designer describes the concept behind his project:
"The Burka was chosen because it is often perceived in the west as a symbol of repression. Then a digital layer was added to it so that women can decide for themselves where they want to position themselves virtually. The Burka sends an image, chosen by the wearer, via bluetooth. Every person next to her can receive her picture via mobile phone and see the woman’s self-determined identity. The laws of the Koran are not broken, so the Charming Burka fulfills the desire of living a more western life, which some Muslim women desire today. The Burka is equipped with bluetooth antenna/micro-controller and uses the OBEX protocol, already working with most mobile phones."
More than 1000 visitors attended the show in the Boston Museum of Science. Model Meiver De la Cruz presented the 'CharmingBurka' on the catwalk, while the audience could receive the portrait of the model on their mobile phones. After the catwalk visitors came around to discuss the idea or pick up the picture, if they weren't able to do it before.
